FAQs
Questions we get asked most
If your question is not here, ring us or send it over. We will answer it straight.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
No, not by that name. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that electrical equipment with the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. A regular regime of inspection and testing is the accepted way of demonstrating that you have done so. Your council, your landlord or your insurer may treat it as compulsory before granting a licence or providing cover.
How often should PAT testing be done?
It depends on the equipment and the environment. Office IT equipment is commonly tested annually. Equipment used in harsher settings, moved frequently or handled by the public may need testing more often. We recommend an interval for each class of equipment based on what we find on site.
Who is allowed to carry out PAT testing?
A competent person with appropriate knowledge and training in electrical safety and testing. Competence is about training and experience rather than a single qualification, and the responsibility for choosing a competent person sits with the duty holder.
Will you have to unplug everything and stop us working?
No. We work around your day, testing in sections and coordinating with whoever is in the room. For sites where any interruption is a problem, we schedule evenings, weekends or school holidays.
How quickly do we get the certificates?
Within 48 hours of the visit in almost all cases. You receive a full asset register with pass and fail results, not just a summary sheet.
What happens if an item fails?
It is taken out of use, labelled, and reported to you with the reason it failed. Minor faults such as a damaged plug can often be repaired on the spot. Anything beyond economic repair we tell you plainly, without pushing a replacement sale.
Are your engineers DBS checked?
Yes, every engineer. A large part of our work is in schools, care homes and healthcare settings, so this is standard for us rather than something arranged on request.
Do you only work with schools and healthcare sites?
No. Those are simply the sectors we are in most often, and they are the ones with the strictest requirements around DBS checks and scheduling. We test for businesses of every size and type, from a single shop or salon to a multi-site organisation. If your business has equipment that plugs in, we can test it.
Do you cover more than PAT testing?
Yes. We carry out emergency lighting inspection, fire extinguisher servicing, fire blanket inspection, microwave emissions testing, ladder inspection and water temperature monitoring for legionella control. Most customers combine several into one visit. Microwave emissions testing is charged in addition to the standard per-item PAT rate.
How much does it cost?
PAT testing is charged at a fixed rate per item, with the rate depending on volume and site layout. Extinguisher servicing is charged at a fixed rate per unit. We agree the rate before we start and it does not change, so your cost is the rate multiplied by the number of items. There is no hourly charge. If the item count on the day differs from your estimate, the rate stays the same and we confirm the revised total with you before continuing.
What areas do you cover?
Our regular patch is Derby, Nottingham and the wider East Midlands, including Burton, Loughborough, Leicester, Chesterfield and Mansfield. Beyond that it comes down to the size of the job rather than the distance. For a large site or a multi-site contract we will travel anywhere in the country.
