No. However, The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. A regular regime of inspection and testing helps to achieve this. Your Council or insurance company may view PAT as compulsory to grant licences or provide cover.

Frequency depends on the type of equipment and usage. Generally, office equipment may be tested annually, whereas equipment used in harsher environments may require more frequent checks.

PAT testing should be carried out by a competent person with the appropriate knowledge and training in electrical safety and testing.
